Kevin Leo was born on 18 Augustus 1971 in Rustenburg. From a very young age it was very clear that he was born for the stage and he grew into one of South Africa’s most versatile and loved entertainers, both in the music and the acting arena.
From as early as second grade in primary school, Kevin performed in lead roles in School plays. During his Primary and Secondary school tuition he very successfully competed in various arts festivals and national singing competitions, receiving many accolades and awards, including a study bursary from the ATKV (Afrikaans taal en kultuur vereniging).
During his military service he was chosen through national auditions , as one of only four singers in the David Group, a Christian Gospel ensemble of the South African Defense Force, and toured the whole country for the duration of his service, performing an excess of 120 shows per annum.
During his tertiary Theology studies at the University of Pretoria, he took part in numerous singing competitions with great success and started his own music ministry group , performing nationaly. In 1994 he took part in the Crescendo competition and was a finalist in the Mens vocal category.
Though he is widely respected as a solo artist, he loves collaborating with fellow artist collegues and regularly performs with Jakkie Louw in a Production titled “Jakkals & Leeu” and with Mathys Roets and Danie Niehaus in the Production titled “Three of the best”. He is a regular face in the biggest South African production Extravaganza ” Huisgenoot Skouspel” and already acted in three successfull South African Movies, ” Liefling, Ek lief jou and Pretville”. He also starred in the very well known Afrikaans television sitcoms “Egoli and 7de laan”.
He released his debut album in 1995 that launched his professional singing career as singer.
In 1997 he started the very popular group “Three of the best” with whom he performed in excess of 60 performances per annum and releasing four top selling albums and a DVD.
In 2001 he released his light classical album “VOCE” through the SONY/BMG record label.
Since 2001 he received voice training from the acclaimed singers and Vocal coaches, Ina Snyman, and Eugeni. B Copin and received his masters Vocal training from the World renowned Dr Emma Renzi.
In 2006 he aimed his Magical Dramatic Lyric Tenor voice at Europe when in June 2006, he competed in the International Opera Competition of Italy – VALSESIA MUSICA – near Milan and won the Fourth prize. At the Winners concert , the President of the competition introduced him to the Italian audience as “Pavarotti e Pocco” or “Little Pavarotti”.
In 2007 he started the light classical Opera and Opperetta group “Kevin Leo and the Sweet voice masters”, starring himself and ten young and very talented black singers with whom he released an album, touring and performing accross the whole of South Africa and even at high profile Government banquets.
In October 2011 he released the very popular album titled “Jy’s Ongelooflik” and in October 2012 he launced the popular multi media production show “Gé.. Lied van my Lewe” and an album with the same title. With this sell out tribute production show of the life and music of the late Gé Korsten, Kevin has audiences on their feet throughout South Africa and will be touring the show in 2013 and 2014.
